James Hardie Fence Installation: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

A full James Hardie fence installation in Jacksonville runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed, and we carry the most commonly requested Hardie panel, trim, and post configurations on our trucks year-round. Most of the time we’re doing a full perimeter run rather than a single panel swap, because Hardie fencing isn’t sold as a plug-and-play repair kit. Homeowners usually call us after a storm took out a section, or they’ve watched the bottom edge of their panels swell and crumble from standing water, and they want to know if they can do just the damaged part or if the whole line needs redoing. We’ll give you that answer on site, with a written price, before you commit to anything.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A finished basement family room with a media wall and wet bar

Unlike some fencing systems with brand-specific proprietary clips and rails, James Hardie fencing is built from the same fiber cement technology as their siding products. Most Jacksonville installs use HardiePlank lap siding in a fence configuration, or HardiePanel vertical siding sheets paired with HardieTrim boards for the rails and posts. There isn’t a dedicated “Hardie fence line” in the way some manufacturers label a product, which is exactly where owners get confused. The compatibility question is less about model numbers and more about matching the right Hardie product to the fence structure: panels ride on pressure-treated wood or steel post framing, and the trim carries the corners, top cap, and post wraps.

If you’re trying to match an existing Hardie fence, look for the nailing pattern and the texture: CedarMill has that wood-grain finish, while Smooth gives you a clean flat face. The right spec depends on the panel span and your exposure, but in our experience the single biggest compatibility gotcha in Florida is mismatched substrate. Hardie fiber cement is not rated for direct ground contact, so if your existing fence rotted at the base and someone buried the panel ends in soil, we’re going to have to cut back to sound framing and correct the clearance before we reinstall. That clearance is code reality down here, not a preference: Jacksonville humidity will wick moisture up any panel that sits in standing water.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Swelling or crumbling at the bottom third of the panel. This is the classic Jacksonville failure mode. Fiber cement is durable, but only when installed with at least 2 inches of clearance above grade. If the bottom edge sits in damp soil or gets hit by sprinkler overspray every morning, the panel absorbs moisture and breaks down from the bottom up.
  • Loose or popped nails along the face boards. Hardie is heavy, roughly 2.3 pounds per square foot for HardiePlank. When the framing behind it hasn’t been spaced properly or the wrong fastener was used, wind load and thermal expansion will eventually push nails out of a face that isn’t locked in tight.
  • Cracks running horizontally through the field of a panel. Fiber cement has low flexural strength compared to wood or vinyl. If a post has settled or the soil underneath has shifted (common in Jacksonville’s sandy, settlement-prone lots), the panel can’t bend with the movement. It cracks instead.
  • Visible gaps between trim boards and panel edges. Caulk will mask this for a season, but in our climate the expansion and contraction cycles are real. If the trim wasn’t cut to allow the proper gap and the caulk has failed, water gets behind the panel and you start seeing staining or rot at the framing.
  • White chalky residue or efflorescence on the face. That residue tells you moisture is moving through the material and carrying minerals with it. It’s a sign the panel is absorbing more water than it should, usually from a subsurface drainage issue or an installation that didn’t account for Jacksonville’s rain volume.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled laundry and mudroom with a bench, cubbies and painted cabinets

For a full James Hardie fence installation in Jacksonville, you’re looking at $3,500 to $9,000. That range covers a typical residential lot with standard 6-foot height, pressure-treated post framing, Hardie panel or plank facing, HardieTrim for corners and top cap, and all fasteners and flashing. The spread comes down to a few things: linear footage, access to the fence line, whether we’re pulling an old fence out and hauling it, the substrate condition behind the existing run, and whether the yard has slope or drainage work that needs correcting before new panels go up.

Every Bradford Remodeling Co Jacksonville fence quote breaks out materials and labor as separate line items. You’ll see exactly what the Hardie material costs, what the framing costs, and what installation labor costs. That written price is fixed before the first tool comes out, per The Garrison Standard. If we hit something unexpected under the old fence, you’ll know the cost before we touch it, not after. And the completed work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if a panel cracks, a post shifts, or a trim joint opens inside a full year, we come back and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can check without risk: look for standing water at the base of your panels, check the clearance above grade, and look for cracks or popped nails. Those observations help us quote the job accurately over the phone. What we don’t recommend is pulling and reinstalling Hardie fence panels yourself. Fiber cement is heavy, the cut edges produce silica dust that requires proper respiratory protection, and a panel that drops during removal will crack or take a chunk out of whatever it hits. Beyond that, the real cost of DIY on a Hardie fence isn’t the panel install, it’s fixing the drainage and framing issues that killed the last fence in the first place. If the substrate isn’t right, the new Hardie fails the same way the old one did.

If you’re in Jacksonville and the fence is already down or on its way, call (904) 337-5929. We’ll come out, look at the fence line, and give you a written price for the repair or the full redo.
