Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Sterling paver driveway or walkway that’s sinking, cracking, or separating, you’re looking at a repair that typically runs $700 to $4,500 in Jacksonville depending on how much of the base has failed. We stock the matching pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and base material to make the repair blend with the original install, and we carry the common Sterling paver sizes on our trucks so most fixes happen in one visit. What usually brings homeowners to us is a trip hazard at the front walk or a low spot in the driveway that holds a puddle three days after rain, and by then the problem has usually been brewing under the surface for a year or two.
We’re an independent Jacksonville contractor, not a Sterling dealer or factory rep. That matters because we’re not here to protect a brand; we’re here to tell you straight whether that failed section needs to be lifted and re-bedded or whether the whole run is going to keep moving. Curtis Lane has been setting pavers in Florida long enough to know that most Sterling paver failures in this market aren’t the paver’s fault. They’re base failures, and the fix starts under the paver, not on top of it.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s hardscape line covers three paver families you’ll see around Jacksonville driveways: the Holland/4×8 units, the larger 6×9 and 12×12 patio slabs, and the tumbled or “Antique” finish lines that have a softer edge. The older jobs in Riverside, Ortega, and San Marco tend to use the smaller 4×8 Holland units in a herringbone or 90-degree pattern. Newer installs out in Bartram Park, Nocatee, and Julington Creek lean toward the 6×9 and larger-format pavers with a soldier-course border.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha Florida owners should know: Sterling changed paver thickness across some product runs. Older Holland-style units were 60mm thick. Some of the current-run units come through at 80mm, which is a full 20mm difference in bed depth. If you’re matching a repair to an existing driveway, measuring the thickness on a pulled unit is the first step, because installing an 80mm paver into a bed graded for 60mm leaves you with a lip that becomes a trip hazard. The second gotcha is color-batch matching. Sterling color blends shift slightly between manufacturing runs, and a paver that looked identical on a website photo will show the mismatch in Jacksonville sunlight. When we repair, we pull units from the least-visible perimeter or we order matched stock, and we set expectations about blend before we cut a single paver.
As for OEM versus aftermarket equivalents, Sterling-branded pavers have tighter dimensional tolerance than generic big-box lookalikes, but we’ve also seen the aftermarket units hold up fine when the base is right. The bigger variable is pattern and size. If your existing layout uses a modular pattern with multiple sizes, you’re better off staying with Sterling or a dimensionally identical unit. A 1/8-inch difference per stone compounds across a 30-foot driveway.
We also keep parts for other brands we work with regularly: KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, mostly on the interior side.

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Low spots that hold water for more than 24 hours after rain. This usually means the crushed-limestone base has washed out or settled unevenly underneath. In Jacksonville’s sandy soil and summer downpours, a low spot is the first visible sign the base is moving.
- Pavers that rock or wobble when you step on them. A rocking paver means the sand bedding under it has eroded out or was never graded properly. One rocker is an easy lift-and-rebed. A field of rockers means the whole section is coming apart from below.
- Hairline cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. That’s a load crack, almost always from a vehicle turning on the edge of the driveway or a tree root flexing the subgrade. The paver didn’t fail; the structure under it did, and cracked pavers will keep cracking until the load path is fixed.
- Joint sand that disappears a few weeks after you sweep it in. If the sand keeps vanishing, water is moving under the pavers and carrying the fines out. You can keep sweeping sand in forever, but until you address the drainage, the joint sand will keep washing through the base.
- Edge pavers leaning or pulling away from the driveway border. The edge restraint has failed or was never spiked in properly. Florida’s sandy subgrade lets edges migrate fast once they’re unconfined, and an unconfined edge accelerates failure across the whole field.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the Jacksonville price picture for Sterling paver repair and replacement work, based on what we see across the market:
| Scope of Work | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Isolated paver replacement (5 to 20 units, lift and re-bed) | $250 – $900 |
| Section repair with base re-excavation (50 – 200 sq ft) | $900 – $3,000 |
| Full driveway re-bed with new edge restraints and joint stabilization | $3,500 – $7,000 |
| Complete paver driveway replacement, including base rebuild | $7,000 – $18,000 |
Every price we give is written before work starts, itemized, and fixed. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s the same discipline Curtis Lane has carried since learning the trade and running crews across the Southeast. You’ll know the paver count, the base depth, the tonnage of limestone, and the labor hours before you sign. No number moves at the door. Every repair also carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the section we touched fails inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That includes base settlement, joint sand washout, or paver shifting within the repaired area.
DIY or Call Us?
Paver work is one of the few exterior repairs where we’ll tell a homeowner the honest split. You can pull a single wobbly paver, scoop out the eroded sand, level the spot with fresh bedding sand, and tap the unit back in with a dead-blow mallet. That’s a two-beer Saturday job, and if it’s one or two pavers, you’ll likely get it looking decent. What goes wrong is when the homeowner keeps chasing individual rockers while the base underneath is washing out. You’ll lift one paver and find half the sand bed is gone, and then you’re digging, and then you’re hauling limestone in a wheelbarrow from the bed of a rental truck, and by Sunday evening you’ve got a bigger hole than you started with and a driveway that’s still not flat.

FAQs

A properly installed Sterling paver driveway in Jacksonville lasts 25 to 40 years for the paver units themselves; the base and bedding typically need re-leveling or partial replacement every 8 to 15 years depending on drainage, tree-root pressure, and vehicle loads. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the section we repair for a full year, and we’ll tell you before we start what the remaining service life looks like. Call (904) 337-5929 for an assessment.
No – a cracked concrete paver cannot be structurally bonded back together, and trying to glue or fill the crack looks worse than the break. The right fix is removing and replacing the cracked units, and while we’re in there, we’ll check whether the crack was a one-off impact or a sign of base settlement under the load path. Call (904) 337-5929 and we’ll give you a written range for the replacement before we schedule anything.
A single-paver lift and re-bed takes under two hours including joint sand and compaction. A 100-square-foot section with base re-excavation is usually a one-day job, and a full driveway base rebuild runs two to three days depending on access and how much limestone has to come out. We bring the paver count, the base depth, and the crew size to match the written estimate, so you know the timeline before we start. Call (904) 337-5929 for a free estimate.
We keep the common Sterling 4×8 Holland units and 6×9 units on our Jacksonville trucks in the standard gray and tan blends. For tumbled-finish lines, color-matched batches, or older 60mm units, we order from our regional supplier and typically have the material in hand within a week. If you’re not sure which paver you have, snap a photo and text it over with a measurement, and we’ll identify it before the first visit. Call (904) 337-5929 and ask for Curtis Lane.
