Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
Schluter kitchen remodeling in Jacksonville typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a failed waterproofing layer under tile, rebuilding a shower bench that’s rotted behind the substrate, or gutting the whole kitchen down to studs. We stock Schluter KERDI membrane, DITRA underlayment, and edge profiles in our Jacksonville shop, so a failed waterproofing assembly usually gets corrected within one to two days. Where owners first notice trouble is almost always the same: grout lines staying dark after drying, tiles sounding hollow under a light tap, or water rings spreading around the sink run or dishwasher opening.
If you’re reading this, chances are you already know a section of your kitchen floor or backsplash is compromised. The good news is Schluter products fail predictably, and we’ve seen the same failure modes enough times across Jacksonville to fix them fast without guesswork.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

We work with the full Schluter line as it’s used in Jacksonville kitchen applications: KERDI-BOARD wall panels, KERDI waterproofing membrane and KERDI-BAND seams, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT uncoupling underlayments, and SCHIENE, QUADEC, and RONDEC finishing profiles. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into is thickness. KERDI-BOARD comes in 5/16, 1/2, and 3/4 inch sheets, and if a countertop fabricator spec’d 1/2 inch for the backsplash, you can’t patch it with a 5/16-inch off-cut and expect the tile plane to stay flush. Same with DITRA: the standard membrane is 1/8 inch, DITRA-XL is 5/16 inch for thicker tile assemblies, and if your floor was built on DITRA-XL, swapping to standard DITRA lowers your finished floor height by 3/16 inch and breaks the transition to adjacent flooring.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Schluter is straightforward: we install genuine Schluter products on every job. Aftermarket membranes exist, and some are decent, but mixing a no-name band with KERDI membrane voids the Schluter warranty on the seam, and that’s precisely where leaks start. If you have a partial Schluter install and want it finished correctly, we match the exact product line you started with. Identifying what you have is simple: KERDI membrane is orange and fleece-covered, DITRA is orange with a grid pattern, and most edge profiles have the Schluter name stamped on the visible flange that gets buried under tile.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout joints near the sink stay dark hours after drying. Water is wicking behind the tile because a KERDI seam wasn’t lapped with the required 2-inch minimum overlap, or the membrane got pierced during tile install. Once the substrate stays wet, you’ll start seeing this pattern on every use.
- Tiles sound hollow when tapped with a screwdriver handle. The mortar used to set the tile didn’t bond to the fleece on the KERDI or DITRA. In Florida’s humidity, unmodified thin-set dries slower than up north, and if a previous installer used modified mortar over DITRA, the uncoupling layer does its job too well, meaning the floor never bonds and tiles eventually crack loose.
- Water staining appears on the ceiling below an upstairs kitchen. This means the waterproofing assembly has failed completely at a seam or around a cabinet penetration. In Jacksonville slab-on-grade homes this won’t apply, but plenty of Riverside and Avondale two-story kitchens dump onto the room below.
- Edge profiles are pitted, darkened, or pulling away from the tile edge. Aluminum profiles corrode when acid-based cleaners sit on them, and once the anodizing is compromised, the profile degrades fast in Jacksonville’s coastal air. This is cosmetic until water starts tracking under it, but every day it stays open, the problem spreads.
- Floor tile movement at the dishwasher or range. DITRA was designed to uncouple tile from the subfloor, but if the subfloor itself wasn’t prepared flat to Schluter’s 1/8 inch over 10 feet tolerance, the membrane can’t fix a bad base. You’ll feel a slight spring or hear a click when you step on a specific tile.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest pricing for Jacksonville, because you should see real numbers before you call:
| Scope of Work | Typical Jacksonville Price |
|---|---|
| Partial membrane repair (backsplash, sink run, seams patched) | $800 – $2,500 |
| Kitchen floor DITRA replacement (full tear-out, subfloor prep, new membrane) | $2,000 – $6,500 |
| Full kitchen remodel with Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling | $14,000 – $45,000 |
| Countertop installation with Schluter edge profiles | $2,000 – $6,500 |
| Backsplash installation with KERDI waterproofing behind sink | $800 – $2,500 |
Every line includes the Schluter materials at contractor cost, all labor including demolition and disposal, thinset and grout, and a written line-item breakdown before we start. The price on paper is the price you pay. Every completed job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair or remodel fails within one year, we return and correct it at no charge. You get that promise in writing, not as a handshake.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Run your palm flat across tile at the suspected failure point and note where it shifts or sounds different. Inspect silicone at the countertop-to-backsplash joint for gaps. Pull a floor vent and look at the tile cross-section from the side to see if you can identify a gap between tile and membrane. These observations help us diagnose faster, and they cost you nothing.
What we don’t recommend is tearing out tile over KERDI or DITRA with a chisel, unless you’ve done membrane work before. The membrane is a waterproofing assembly. A tear or a missed seam lap means you’ve fixed a cracked tile and created a leak path that will fail slower and cost more later. And if the cabinet base or subfloor is already swollen from long-term water exposure, you’re probably past a patch job anyway. That’s when you call (904) 337-5929 and we come look. The estimate is free, and you’ll get a written scope and price before any demo starts.
FAQs

Properly installed Schluter KERDI and DITRA assemblies should last 20-plus years in Jacksonville, and Schluter’s own warranty covers products for up to 10 years when installed per spec. The weak point is never the orange membrane itself; it’s the installer not lapping seams correctly, using the wrong thin-set, or skipping the flood test on a wet area before tile goes down. If you’ve had a failure within the first few years, odds are high the install didn’t follow Schluter’s printed specs. Call (904) 337-5929 and we’ll assess what failed and why.
Yes, in many cases. If the leak is confined to one seam or one damaged section of KERDI behind a backsplash, we can open that area, clean the substrate, patch with KERDI-BAND and proper overlap, and re-tile. A floor-wide DITRA failure is a different animal: if the membrane wasn’t bonded to the subfloor in the first place, patching a section doesn’t fix the rest of the floor. We’ll tell you which situation you have after one inspection, not after opening half the kitchen. Call (904) 337-5929 for a free estimate.
A backsplash or membrane seam repair takes one to two days. A full kitchen floor DITRA replacement takes three to five days, depending on subfloor condition and tile lead time. A complete Schluter kitchen remodel runs four to eight weeks. We give you a written schedule with the estimate, and we hold to it unless we find hidden damage, in which case we stop and bring you a change-order in writing before proceeding. No surprises at the door.
We keep KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, DITRA, DITRA-XL, and common SCHIENE and QUADEC profiles in stock at our Jacksonville shop. If you have a less common profile finish or a specific KERDI-BOARD thickness, we source it through our local Schluter distributor, which is typically a two-to-three-day lead in northeast Florida. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for projects where the cabinet or countertop spec needs to be updated at the same time.
