Wellborn Fence Installation: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

Wellborn fence installation in Jacksonville typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full perimeter job, including materials, posts set in concrete, and finish work. Most homeowners call us because a section has rotted at the base, a gate post has leaned out of plumb, or the original install was never done to Florida wind-load standards. We stock Wellborn-compatible fence components and can match most existing lines within a few days of the estimate.

What we see most often in Jacksonville: fence sections that looked fine for the first few years start failing where the pickets meet the bottom rail, because ground contact and our humidity work on untreated cuts. The gate starts dragging. A post gets soft at grade. None of these are cosmetic. They’re structural, and they compound fast once water gets into the end grain.

Bradford Remodeling Co Jacksonville is an independent contractor. We install and repair Wellborn fence systems, but we are not affiliated with the Wellborn brand itself. That independence matters: we tell you what’s actually wrong and what it costs to fix, with no brand loyalty clouding the recommendation.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

Wellborn fence products fall into a few broad lines: standard dog-ear privacy panels, board-on-board, horizontal slat, and their aluminum-reinforced gate frames. The compatibility gotcha for Jacksonville homeowners is this: Wellborn privacy panels are manufactured in 6-foot and 8-foot widths, and the post spacing on an existing install tells you which one you have before you buy a single replacement panel. If your posts are set at 6 feet on center, an 8-foot panel will not drop in, and cutting it invites rot at the cut edge unless the cut is sealed correctly.

Check the inside face of a picket or the back of a rail for a stamped Wellborn logo and a four-digit date code. That code tells you the production year, which matters because Wellborn shifted to a denser pine substrate around 2018. Pre-2018 sections in Jacksonville fail faster, and we generally recommend replacing those runs rather than patching them. For aluminum gate frames, the hinge post bracket spec changed from a 2-inch to a 2.5-inch offset on newer runs, so a replacement gate that fits a 2015 post will bind on a 2021 post unless you shim or replace the bracket.

OEM versus aftermarket: Wellborn OEM panels are pressure-treated and factory-sealed, which matters for Florida sun and rain. Quality aftermarket panels come from regional mills and can match thickness, but verify the picket width: Wellborn uses a true 5.5-inch picket, while some aftermarket stock runs 5.25 inches, and that quarter-inch gap accumulates across a run. We stock both OEM and mill-matched aftermarket on the truck and will show you the difference before we order anything.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing

Here are the five failures we see most in the Jacksonville market, with what’s actually happening underneath each one:

  • Posts soft at grade or leaning. Water collects at the concrete collar and the post wicks it upward. In Jacksonville’s wet season, a post can go from solid to spongy in a single summer. This is the failure that takes down otherwise healthy panels.
  • Gate dragging or binding. The hinge post has moved, or the frame itself has racked from wind load. Tightening hinge screws into rotted wood buys weeks, not years. The fix is a new post or a reinforced aluminum gate frame set in fresh concrete.
  • Pickets splitting or cupping. Direct sun on the unsealed face causes the wood to dry faster on the outside than the inside. That differential stress splits the board along the grain. Sealing slows it, but a badly cupped picket will never lay flat again.
  • Bottom rail and picket ends darkening, softening, or showing fungal black spots. This is ground-contact rot from splash-back. It happens fastest where sprinkler heads hit the fence line. The damage is usually confined to the bottom 6 to 8 inches, which is why partial-section repair can work if caught early.
  • Rail ends pulling out of the posts. This means the original installer face-nailed instead of using structural brackets, or the bracket fasteners have rusted through. In coastal Jacksonville air, uncoated steel fasteners rust from the inside; the rail looks intact until it drops.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

In Jacksonville, a full Wellborn-compatible fence installation runs $3,500 to $9,000. The spread comes down to linear footage, whether we’re pulling and resetting existing posts or setting new ones, gate count, and whether the ground is sandy or packed clay. A 100-linear-foot privacy fence with one gate on flat, open ground usually lands near the middle of that range. A property with slope, two gates, and old concrete post collars to break out runs toward the top.

Every bid includes removal and disposal of the failed sections, new pressure-treated posts set in concrete, Wellborn or mill-matched panels, gates and hardware, and a written line-item price before we put a shovel in the ground. No numbers that move at the door. The completed work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fence fails inside that year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That promise is in writing, on the document you sign at closeout.

For a partial repair, like replacing a rotted post and two panels, the cost is materially less. Curtis Lane, our owner, will walk the line with you and mark exactly what fails, what holds, and what the repair scope is. No replacing good wood because it’s easier to demo the whole run.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can check yourself: walk the line and press a screwdriver into the base of each post. If it sinks more than a quarter inch, that post is compromised. Look at the rail ends and the bottom picket line. Check the gate by lifting it; play in the hinges means the post is moving. What we advise against is pulling posts yourself: Wellborn posts in this market are typically set 24 to 30 inches deep, and a rotted post snapped off at grade leaves a concrete collar that fights you. Breaking it out with a post hole digger and a steel bar is how shoulders get torn and fence lines go crooked.

On a full replacement, there’s also the JEA underground locate to run before we dig, and in Jacksonville proper, some neighborhoods have fence height and setback rules that need checking against code before work starts. We handle that as part of the written scope. If you’d rather just know the number to fix it, call (904) 337-5929 and we’ll schedule the estimate. Scope it right the first time, and the job goes a lot smoother when nobody’s surprised.
